Sustainability
We take responsibility
Castings play a crucial role in our day-to-day lives. Just think of the cast iron used in vehicles transporting goods from A to B. Or the cast iron in wind turbines generating renewable energy. Cast iron will remain inherently useful in the future, as it is a strong, durable and recyclable material. But cast iron production also has a negative impact on the planet’s resources and contributes to climate change.
We need to handle this.
For us, sustainability is about balancing economic growth with corporate social responsibility and reducing our negative environmental impacts. We regard sustainability as an important driver in ensuring the future success of our business, long-term cooperation with our customers and the development of the societies in which we operate. For us, sustainable growth is both a responsibility and a requirement for our continued existence. This is not only the right path to take. Our customers expect it. Our employees of today and tomorrow expect it.
As one of Northern Europe’s largest foundry group, we have a responsibility to work proactively to reduce the negative environmental impacts connected with our operations. Achieving this while also meeting our ambitious growth targets will be a challenge. But we are rising to this challenge.
BIRN Group
Sustainability Report 2023
For the second year in a row, we are publishing a sustainability report for the entire BIRN Group.

The BIRN Group will be covered by the new EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive from 2026.
However, we are already documenting and mapping how we work with sustainability throughout the group, and last year we published our first sustainability report. This is not only driven by compliance with the law, it is increasingly becoming a competition parameter that customers and partners expect us as a supplier to adhere with.
Environment
At BIRN, we want to show responsibility by minimising our negative impact on the environment. We are therefore working proactively to reduce our energy consumption and increase our recycling of natural resources and surplus heat, and we are investigating how we can contribute positively to our surroundings.
Social
BIRN employs hundreds of employees, who constitute our most important resource. Safety, security, well-being, passion and decency are therefore keywords in our approach to work in all our companies. As an active part of the local communities in which each company is located, we also contribute positively to our near environments.
Governance
At BIRN, good corporate governance provides the foundation for healthy businesses and workplaces. Despite the differences between our companies, we are one team. We therefore organise ourselves in a way that ensures synergies and common guidelines in areas such as leadership principles, IT and purchasing.
