A passion for machines and quality in everyday life at BIRN
BIRN has a proud tradition of delivering high-quality cast iron products. Behind this success are dedicated employees like Thomas Johannes Thomsen, a 27-year-old foundry worker on the night shift, who has brought his passion for machines and technology to the workplace.
Thomas' journey didn't start in a factory but as a carpenter in West Jutland. After training and trying various industries such as a mechanic and truck driver, Thomas returned to his hometown, Bækmarksbro, in 2018. It was here that fate led him to BIRN. A knee and back injury, related to his previous work as a carpenter, prompted Thomas to seek a less physically demanding career.
With his family's strong ties to BIRN, where his father had previously worked and several family members still are employed, Thomas took the step and joined the foundry department.
"My father has been employed in the Fettling Operation Department at BIRN since he was 16 years old until the year 2000. My sister works in the Core Operations, my two cousins in Sorting, and then I have an aunt who has worked in the Fettling Operation Department for 17 years. So, BIRN has always been a part of my world," says Thomas.

It was an acquaintance who suggested to Thomas to become a foundry worker at BIRN. After a conversation with his father, who mentioned that the foundry was probably one of the best departments in the factory, Thomas decided to take the chance. Two days after submitting his application, he found himself as a foundry worker, now operating one of the many DISA molding machines that pour liquid iron into the molds.
"Initially, I thought it was a bit strange to work in a factory when I was used to the fresh air as a carpenter. But the job turned out to be super interesting," says Thomas.
Operating the DISA machine requires not only physical handling of the machines but also an understanding of electronics and mechanics. Thomas' curiosity and interest in technology have made him a resourceful employee, bringing order and calm to the production.
The best part of the foundry job
"The best part of the job is probably the liquid iron. It's quite impressive, but also hot. But you get used to it. Furthermore, it's nice to contribute to delivering high-quality cast iron products, along with good colleagues," says Thomas enthusiastically.
Although the job can be challenging, Thomas is always motivated by the desire to deliver the best quality.
"I get annoyed if there are mistakes. That's why I'm always extra attentive when operating the machine. If there are errors in the products after casting, I want to know so I can correct the mistake," he explains.
With two young sons, aged 8 and almost 2, Thomas has chosen to work the night shift to balance work and family life. "Actually, I would say that BIRN is the workplace where I have been most happy and motivated to show up every day. Working the night shift works well for me. It's about finding a rhythm in your daily life, so it gives more energy throughout the day," explains Thomas.
“The age range, which ranges from 20 years up to 60 years, is only positive. It leads to good conversations and laughter.”

Good training makes good colleagues
But Thomas' commitment doesn't stop at the machines. He is also responsible for training new foundry workers and is happy to share his knowledge with colleagues.
"I hope that my enthusiasm and interest in the processes rub off on the new employees. It's important that we motivate the newcomers so that we can have employees who want to stay longer in the job. It's always nice when you have some regular colleagues whom you get along with well and where we can help each other. It creates camaraderie and security," he says.
Even though Thomas works the night shift, there is strong communication between shifts. The good handover and the good relationship with colleagues from the day shift contribute to creating a positive working environment. And as Thomas says, "the age range, which ranges from 20 years up to 60 years, is only positive. It leads to good conversations and laughter," he concludes.
For Thomas, BIRN is not just a workplace; it's a place where his passion for machines and the desire to deliver quality come together every day.
