Alex Remme Larsen, an engineering student at Aarhus University's campus in Herning, is currently in his 5th semester internship at BIRN. Here, he is exploring data collection and analysis to optimize casting production and reduce energy consumption.

No pseudo-projects. That was one of the requirements from Alex Remme Larsen when he was looking for an internship for his 5th semester. The 22-year-old engineering student knows too many engineering students who ended up doing monotonous work and ad hoc tasks during their internships.

After several internship interviews, Alex chose BIRN's energy department – a decision he hasn't regretted:

- I chose BIRN because of the strong focus on sustainability and the many exciting tasks in this field. And it quickly proved to be the right decision. I have responsibilities, my tasks motivate me, and, at the same time, I have the opportunity to challenge myself, he explains.

Alex is often found in the foundry production, where he collects relevant raw data for a project focusing on scrap composition. With the right mix of scrap types, various alloy materials can be saved, while the scrap blend becomes more standardized. This improves production flow and reduces energy consumption.

- I really enjoy working in the entire foundry instead of just sitting behind my desk. The freedom and responsibility give my work a completely different dimension, which is truly motivating – especially when you can see that it makes a difference, Alex says.

“Our strategy is that students must be motivated and ideally want to stay after their internship. Therefore, there should be no pseudo-projects, as it hampers real motivation and job satisfaction”

Group’s Size Offers New Opportunities

BIRN employs over 550 people at the foundry in Holstebro across many different departments. In addition to the foundry itself, the company also has departments for surface treatment, logistics, IT, and many other fields, regularly taking in interns.

BIRN in Holstebro is also part of the BIRN Group with companies in Germany, Sweden, Italy, and other regions in Denmark. The size of the group offers many opportunities for ambitious students, says Group HR Manager, Morten Madsen:

- Our strategy is that students must be motivated and ideally want to stay after their internship. Therefore, there should be no pseudo-projects, as it hampers real motivation and job satisfaction, he says, adding:

- If a student has a good idea, we allow them to continue working on it, even if it requires financial investments from the company. We want to give our students and apprentices the opportunity to take responsibility, and through previous internship projects, it has also proven to be a good deal for us.
