David went from IT apprentice to department head
David Stampe Grønborg started at BIRN back in 2007 as an IT technician apprentice. Today, he is the Group IT Manager and responsible for BIRN Group's IT department.
As Group IT Manager at BIRN, David Stampe Grønborg handles both operational tasks and makes strategic decisions such as choosing IT systems, building IT architecture, and digital transformation of processes. He is deeply involved in the day-to-day operations while also being responsible for BIRN Group's IT department, which has five employees under his supervision.
- My primary task is to get all employees within the company on board when we introduce new digital solutions. Digitalization is meant to assist our employees, and if we don't explain this objective properly, digitalization ultimately creates no value, he says and adds about his work at BIRN Group:
- The coolest part of my job is driving a tradition-rich corporation in a more digital direction. BIRN has 127 years of history, so there's a unique story and culture here, which makes it even more exciting to find new and more digital ways of doing things.
“I now understand how much leadership is about people rather than just technical knowledge. I am particularly focused on getting people on board, so they understand why we do what we do and what it will specifically mean for them.”

Leadership role required a new knowledge
Good governance and leadership are key components of BIRN Group's corporate strategy. Therefore, all companies within the group emphasize leadership and ongoing leadership development, including training for leaders.
David experienced this firsthand when he became the leader of BIRN Group's IT department in 2019. Previously, he had primarily excelled with his technical skills, but now there was a demand for entirely different competencies.
- It quickly became clear to me that my background as an IT specialist needed to be complemented with new knowledge about leadership if I wanted to become the leader I aspired to be. That's why I chose to pursue a diploma in leadership, so I could elevate my competencies, he says.
He also mentions the strong support he received from BIRN's management for his studies:
- I received both financial support for my education and time to study and do homework during working hours, so my studies didn't consume all my free time. As a father of three children, it all must come together. There was a lot of support when I decided to return to school.
David's leadership education was an eye-opener for him and, according to him, has contributed to making him a better leader:
- I now understand how much leadership is about people rather than just technical knowledge. I am particularly focused on getting people on board, so they understand why we do what we do and what it will specifically mean for them. I think this is especially important when working with technology and digitalization, he concludes.
